Street Scenes

Panther Vision

Kris B. Mamula photo

Imagine this scene with no car in the background. That’s the plan for Schenley Plaza, the area between the Hillman and Carnegie libraries. Right now, the little bit of grass for these picnickers is overwhelmed by the asphalt for parked cars. Plans are to turn the parking lot into a three-acre lawn, complete with wireless Internet access and a portable stage, too. The state has already committed nearly half the funds for the $11 million makeover, and the rest of the funding is nearly complete. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is overseeing the project, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Oakland business and civic groups. The conservancy expects the transformation to be done sometime next spring. Joni Mitchell would be proud.
