In the 12th century, a Spanish Jewish philosopher wrote a treatise called The Kuzari that defended Judaic tenets and practices. The text has since shaped the practice and thought of Judaism in various ways. In a new book, Pitt’s Adam Shear, an assistant professor of religious studies, traces how viewpoints of The Kuzari have changed through the centuries. Titled The Kuzari and the Shaping of Jewish Identity, 1167-1900 (Cambridge University Press), the book won a National Jewish Book Award in the scholarship     category this year.
