Zellous

This was a whirlwind spring for Pitt’s All-America guard, Shavonte Zellous, who helped lead the women’s basketball team to national prominence in recent years, with a first-ever national Sweet 16 appearance in 2008 and another in 2009. Zellous, who graduated in April, became the first player in Pitt history (men’s or women’s teams) and the ninth in Big East history to score 600 points in three separate seasons. She led Pitt in scoring over the past three seasons and hit the 2,000- point milestone, only the third Pitt player to hit that mark. Postseason, she was awarded her third All-Big-East First Team honor, becoming the first in Pitt history to earn first-team honors three times. In April, she was honored as Pittsburgh’s 2008 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year. And, it gets even better. In May, Zellous became Pitt’s first-ever women’s draft pick in the WNBA, where she was selected by the Detroit Shock in the first round. Recently, her Pitt jersey was inducted into the Ring of Honor at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and in June she started in her first-ever professional game, opening at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Swwoooshh. She’s on her way.
